At McCain Foods, we view our Corporate Social Responsibility as a fundamental expression of how we conduct all aspects of our business. We know it's our responsibility to be a good corporate citizen by acting in ways that support our local communities, our environment and our employees. We do it because it's the right thing to do. This responsibility is embedded in our culture, not just because it's good business, but because of the effect it has on society at large. We have made sustainable environmental impacts that will continue to improve the lives of the people around us.

Our commitment to caring, integrity, respect and ethics is demonstrated in our Code of Conduct, our advertising commitment, our community involvement, our dedication to the environment and the safety of our customers, consumers and employees.

Advertising

McCain Foods is committed to honest, ethical advertising of the benefits of our products in a manner consistent with our traditional high standard of behaviour. The global principles outlined below demonstrate our commitment to upholding integrity in advertising.

We will not:

  • Create advertising, advergaming, promotional initiatives or other communications targeted directly to children under the age of 12;
  • Place advertisements in media targeted to children under the age of 12; and
  • Unfairly or inaccurately represent the nutritional value or benefits of our products.

Community Involvement

Not only is our vision of Good Food. Better Life about our products — it's also about our commitment to give back to the communities in which we live and work.

Our Better Life initiatives support scientific and medical research, computers for schools, precious resource preservation and so much more. We also help programs aimed at ending poverty and social injustice, fighting hunger in the developing world, and we support and encourage employee teams that walk, bike, run and raft to raise money for cancer, heart and stroke, diabetes and other critical illnesses.

Environment

Quite simply, a healthy environment and sustainable agricultural practices are essential to the production of our wholesome foods. As a result, we strive to continuously improve our overall performance from farm to fork through renewable, efficient energy sources, water conservation and reduction, increased use of renewable and recyclable packaging, waste minimization and recovery, best practices in environmental management systems and the nurturing of an eco-mindset throughout our entire organization.

Through our devotion to sustainable growth, we will ensure that we can continue to deliver safe and high quality products for our customers well into the future while leaving a lighter environmental footprint in the communities where we operate.

Food Safety

There is no higher priority for a food company than the safety of its products. McCain has many rigorous measures in place at our plants to ensure that the food we manufacture is safe for consumption. We have adopted the American Institute of Bakers (AIB) Gold Standard certification system which assures customers that a manufacturer's facility has met the highest standards of:

  • Sanitation and cleanliness
  • Food safety
  • Ingredient quality
  • Manufacturing integrity

The AIB Gold Standard is awarded to facilities that score successfully on three audits:

  • Good Manufacturing Practices and Sanitation
  • Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points
  • Quality System Evaluation

Code of Conduct

At McCain, we are committed to dealing fairly with one another, our customers, consumers, suppliers, and communities. As company co-founder Harrison McCain said, "Good ethics is good business."

Our Code of Conduct along with our values acts as our moral compass. It is our overarching pledge that we will demonstrate integrity and respect at all times, in all that we do. While our international divisions define behaviours that respect local laws and culture, our common platform is reflected in our Code of Conduct.

Employee Safety

Safety is the direct responsibility of each and every employee, and is vitally important to our accountability as a caring, responsible organization. We continually reinforce the conditions and behaviours that ensure a safe workplace and strict compliance with occupational safety laws and regulations. We believe that:

  • Nothing we do is worth getting hurt for
  • Safety can and must be managed
  • Every injury could, and should, have been prevented
  • We owe ourselves and each other a safe place to work
